Dieting has become an American pastime with over 45 million people dieting in the past year. If you search for “the best diet to lose weight”, there are over 890,000,000 results. And it’s so hard to know where to begin. All too often, people set a goal weight, go on a diet (usually highly restrictive in food choices and low in calories). The diet is “successful”; however, it’s unrealistic. And because the dietary changes were unreasonable and, oftentimes, unhealthy, it’s inevitable the pounds come back because people slowly go back to their pre-diet eating. Going hungry is not a sustainable diet plan.
Also, eating behaviors play into weight gain. A major obstacle to changing eating habits is using food for reasons other than satisfying hunger. Emotions such as stress, sadness, or boredom can lead to overeating. It also doesn’t happen that we’ve been sold, as a society, that food can alleviate emotional pain. Unhealthy eating behaviors, too, lead to weight gain: snacking while watching TV, while working, or eating “by the clock” regardless of hunger. These practices, along with following restrictive diets, can prevent long-term weight loss success.

To be called an RDN, you must have a degree from an accredited university. Our team of virtual dietitians must stay informed of guidelines set by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to maintain their certification as well as provide our patients with expert online nutrition counseling.
