“All registered dietitians are nutritionists but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians.”
Many use the terms ‘dietitian’ and ‘nutritionist’ interchangeably. Be aware that only a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) meets rigorous academic requirements with clinical training. To be called an RDN, you must have a degree from an accredited university. Our team of virtual dietitians must stay informed of guidelines set by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to maintain their certification as well as provide our patients with expert online nutrition counseling. Additionally, ongoing education is mandatory to maintain this title.
New guidelines have established that as of 2024, anyone who wants to be an RDN must have a master’s degree in an approved field (like food and nutrition sciences, foodservice systems management, business, economics, computer science, sociology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology and chemistry).
Registered Dietitians help people achieve their optimal health through nutrition interventions. Moreover, RDNs also help shape public health, having a profound influence on families’ and communities’ food choices.
Because anyone can call themselves a “nutritionist” — whether they’ve completed an online course or attended a weekend conference — it’s important to be wary of any nutrition or dietary interventions provided by them. Nutritionists are often free from government regulation. We don’t doubt that most are well-intentioned; unfortunately, because they usually lack the rigorous academic standards on ongoing education requirements, it’s not uncommon for a nutritionist to adhere to diet fads, trends, pop culture tendencies, and quick-fixes which don’t create sustainable, meaningful lifestyle changes.
When looking for the right online registered dietitian nutritionist, whether you need medical nutrition therapy or simply want to learn how to nourish yourself better, ask for credentials. We look forward to working with you.
