Heal after birth. Receive strategies to manage sleep deprivation. Get individualized diet plans to support breastfeeding. Manage the baby blues. Reach, and maintain, a healthy weight.
Your baby is here, and it probably feels like everything has turned upside down: diaper changing, feedings, burpings, cuddling … who has time to to cook a nourishing meal, much less consult with a nutritionist? Our online nutritionists can save you a trip to the office and provide you with reasonable, time-saving, nutrition tips, strategies, and support to help you heal and feel better during this hectic, hectic time.
Honestly, there is no best diet. Every woman’s postpartum experience and healing are different, and everyone’s nutrition needs vary. That said, there are a few musts for every woman after giving birth:
Protein: Ensuring an adequate intake of protein is crucial for facilitating tissue repair and promoting recovery post-delivery. Opting for lean protein sources such as poultry, fish, legumes, and tofu can effectively meet this need.
Iron: Especially if you’ve experienced significant blood loss during delivery, maintaining sufficient iron levels is essential for your overall well-being. Including iron-rich foods like lean meats, fortified cereals, and leafy greens in your diet can help replenish your iron stores.
Calcium: Supporting bone health is paramount, particularly if you’re breastfeeding, as both you and your baby benefit from strong bones. Incorporating calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, fortified plant-based milks, and leafy greens into your daily meals can fulfill this requirement.
Folate: Folate plays a critical role in tissue repair and cell division, making it indispensable for postpartum recovery. Introducing foods like dark leafy greens, citrus fruits, and legumes into your diet ensures an adequate folate intake.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Essential for brain development and mood regulation, omega-3 fatty acids are a must-have in your postpartum diet. Incorporating sources like fatty fish (such as salmon), flaxseeds, and walnuts into your meals can provide the necessary omega-3s to support your well-being.
Fluids: Most women are dehydrated, and during birth women lose a lot of liquid. Add breastfeeding to the mix, and you can be running on empty. Drink water (steer clear of sugary drinks) to replenish those lost fluids.
After giving birth, many women feel like strangers in their own bodies — fatigue, discomfort (post birth and/or surgery), swollen and painful breasts, hemorrhoids, fatigue (yes, its worth mentioning again …those little babies are soooooo demanding), and baby blues are just part of the postpartum package.
As postpartum nutrition coaches and mothers, we can help. Our online nutritionists can provide virtual support to women from around the country (and you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home). We understand you want to return to your pre-pregnancy weight, but we want to emphasize as postnatal dietitians that this is not the time diet. One of the qualified virtual dietitians on our team will develop a diet plan with you to help you through this time and get you the nutrients and calories you need to provide adequate, high-quality breast milk, strategies for foods to boost your mood, and the confidence to choose the best, healthiest foods to get you to a healthy weight.

Many use the terms ‘dietitian’ and ‘nutritionist’ interchangeably. Be aware that only a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) meets rigorous academic requirements with clinical training. To be called an RDN, you must have a degree from an accredited university. Our team of virtual dietitians must stay informed of guidelines set by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to maintain their certification as well as provide our patients with expert online nutrition counseling.
