A dietitian specializing in eating disorders is a licensed professional equipped with the training and certifications to assist patients dealing with eating disorders and disordered eating. Their unique qualifications enable them to work with patients in improving their relationship with food and their bodies.
The distinction between an eating disorder and disordered eating lies in how closely symptoms align with the criteria established by the American Psychiatric Association. “Disordered eating” is a description rather than a diagnosis. While some individuals with disordered eating may meet the criteria for Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS), it’s also possible to exhibit disordered eating patterns that do not fit current eating disorder diagnoses. Nonetheless, addressing eating concerns without a formal diagnosis is crucial, as they can progress into more severe disorders and pose health risks.
Eating disorders are serious and often life-threatening conditions characterized by extreme alterations in eating behaviors, thoughts, and emotions related to food and body image. These are mental health illnesses, with common types including anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge-eating disorder. Additional eating disorders encompass bigorexia, diabulimia, orthorexia, and night eating. Many individuals affected by eating disorders, as well as their loved ones, experience feelings of helplessness and fear.
Statistics highlight the widespread impact, with up to 30 million Americans of all ages and genders grappling with eating disorders. Disturbingly, 50% of 9-year-old girls and 80% of 10-year-old girls have already been on a “diet.” College-aged women often resort to dieting, with 90% having used diet as a weight control measure, and 22% reporting frequent dieting. Additionally, 25% of college-aged women employ bingeing and purging for weight management. It’s essential to note that 10% to 15% of individuals with anorexia and bulimia are male, although men may be less inclined to seek treatment due to the perception of eating disorders as a predominantly female issue.
We recognize that eating disorders touch the lives of mothers, fathers, grandparents, sisters, brothers, teachers, coaches, and more. Our team possesses the experience and credentials necessary to aid patients dealing with disordered eating and eating disorders. Embracing the philosophy of Health at Every Size (HAES), we promote body diversity and health. Nutrition therapy, tailored with one of our experienced dietitian nutritionists, is a crucial component of the healing process.
The road to health and recovery involves a collaborative team, including mental health professionals, primary care physicians, and family support. Integral to this team is nutritional counseling provided by a registered dietitian. Together, we will work to develop a personalized nutrition plan, teaching you to view food as nourishment rather than an adversary, ally, or something to control at all costs. Our approach also involves addressing and transforming your relationship with food, nutrition, your body, and exercise. We extend support and nutrition education to family members and caregivers, recognizing that eating disorders impact everyone involved.
Getting support from a community can be a key piece of healing and sustained recovery. Guided by expert nutritionists, these support groups provide people with eating disorders a space to connect and feel heard. Join our groups to get evidence-based information, menu support, and more.

Many claim to be a nutritionist. But only a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) meets rigorous academic requirements with clinical training, holding a degree from an accredited university. Our RDNs stay informed of guidelines set by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to provide our patients with expert nutrition counseling.
